Hello my name is Mike. My girlfriend and I will be starting a new life in Nevada's Pilot Valley near Montello. This Blog will be used to record and track our progress and idea's.
Well tomorrow we go to hopefully get solar panels. The large inverter is on the way and several smaller ones we already have. Lights are hooked up and a small fan and forced air heater have been installed. All gas appliances are packed and set aside for emergency back up. Food is being purchased a little at a time right now we have two paper sacks full of food. Aug 1 is fast approaching and we will be ready.
Hello Mike. I stumbled across your blog from another guys blog who is planning a move to Montello. I see you guys are planning to move a little further south. I recently purchased some land in Montello and am very excited about it. I spent a couple days out there last week and love it. This post discussed stocking up on food. I found a website a few years ago that gave me one of the best and cheapest food sources I've ever heard of...and it's easy. check out the following link:

click on "survival foods" and then on "saving money with a thermos bottle"
Basically, you use a super insulated thermos to cook in. Kurt does a very good job of explaining it so I'll leave the rest to him. I have 200 pounds of wheat on hand at a cost of $40 and figure I can eat breakfast for over two years on this plan. One hint, the thermos you need is at wal-mart, but not in the housewares department....you have to go to the sporting goods section.
This food isn't tasty like pop tarts, but bland as it is, it goes down easy and is super healthy. I usually add raisins or honey when I need to spice it up. May all your Nevada dreams come true!
35 yo construction worker very physically fit, really into bodybuilding and good health for my self and the earth. I spent some time in the desert back when I was in the 82nd airborne and am really looking forward to making my home there.
